MADRID, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Getafe's Turkish international forward Enes Unal confirmed on Thursday that he has suffered a broken cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Unal suffered the injury during his side's 1-0 win away to Betis on Wednesday night, which gave them three vital points in their battle to avoid relegation.
He will now need an operation and is expected to be out of action until early 2024.
"Hello everyone, I have bad news for you. I have broken my cruciate ligament. Life moves in mysterious ways. While we were fighting for a great goal and I felt that I was taking great steps in my career, I can't lie. It's been a huge blow to me," the 26-year-old striker wrote on social media.
Despite Getafe's struggles this season, Unal has netted a vital 14 goals to keep them just out of the relegation zone and had been strongly linked with a move to Portuguese giants Benfica this summer.
Getafe are currently in 16th place in La Liga but are level on 38 points with Valladolid, who occupy the last relegation spot, and Unal will miss their two remaining matches, which are at home to Osasuna and away to Valladolid.
"I have two things left to do now. Support my teammates until the end, I have no doubt that we will save ourselves. The second will be to prepare for the operation and move forward day by day. I feel very positive and I feel that this is another challenge in my path," he commented.
