DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Construction of a fishing harbor in Tanzania will start in 2022, the Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Mashimba Ndaki said Thursday.
Ndaki said the government has currently engaged a consultant from Italy to undertake feasibility studies in Kilwa District, Lindi Region, for the site of the projected fishing harbor along the Indian Ocean coastline.
"After completion of the feasibility studies in December 2021, the government will float a tender for the construction of the harbor that we expect to begin in February or March 2022," he told a press conference in the capital Dodoma.
Ndaki said the government has initially allocated 50 billion Tanzanian shillings (about 21.7 million U.S. dollars) for the construction of the first-ever fishing harbor in the east African nation.
In April 2021, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Rashid Tamatamah said plans were underway to acquire eight state-of-the-art fishing vessels for deep-sea fishing to revive the country's fisheries sector. He said the fishing vessels would be secured under financial support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
