A majority of the PGA Tour's first four events in 2021 will be held without spectators because of COVID-19 precautions.
The 2021 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif., became the latest event to announce its decision Monday. The event is still scheduled for Jan. 28-31.
"We recognize that COVID-19 requires dramatic modifications to the operations of our annual event," said Marty Gorsich, CEO of the Century Club of San Diego, which operates the Farmers. "We have been working closely with the PGA Tour as well as the county and city of San Diego in our planning. The safety and well-being of everyone affiliated with the Farmers Insurance Open and our community remains our top priority."
The 2021 PGA Tour kicks off its schedule with the Sentry Tournament of Champions Jan. 7-10. The Maui-based tournament will host a limited number of spectators. The next week the Sony Open in Honolulu will be played without fans.
The week before the Farmers, The American Express in La Quinta, Calif., will also be played without spectators.
